Honest assessment of DIY rodent control options for NYC apartments and homes. Snap traps, ultrasonic repellers, boric acid — what actually works against NYC rats and mice.

Home improvement stores and Amazon offer dozens of rodent control products promising to solve your problem. Some are genuinely useful. Most are ineffective for NYC's specific rodent species and building conditions. Here is an honest assessment based on what actually works in New York City apartments and homes.
Victor snap traps and similar mechanical snap traps are legitimately effective for house mice when placed correctly. Key principles: place traps perpendicular to walls with the trigger end facing the wall (mice run along walls and will not approach traps placed parallel to a wall). Use peanut butter or chocolate as bait — not cheese. Check and reset daily. Place far more traps than you think necessary — 6 to 8 traps for a single room with evidence of mice.
Larger snap traps (Victor M326 style) work for Norway rats but are significantly more challenging than for mice. Rats are neophobic — they avoid new objects in familiar areas for 2 to 4 days. Do not set traps for the first 2 to 3 days after placing them; let the rat investigate the unset trap and eat the bait before setting it. This dramatically increases catch rate.
Steel wool, copper mesh, and hardware cloth from hardware stores are legitimate temporary exclusion materials. The limitation is that DIY installation rarely achieves the comprehensive coverage that a professional exclusion provides, leaving gaps that rodents continue to use.
Conclusively ineffective. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have shown that rodents habituate to ultrasonic devices within days to weeks and return to normal behavior. The FTC has taken action against manufacturers making unsupported efficacy claims. Save your money.
Rodents experience temporary aversion to strong scents but habituate quickly, especially when food and shelter are the competing motivation. No published research supports peppermint oil as an effective rodent control measure.
Electromagnetic and variable frequency electronic repellers follow the same pattern as ultrasonics — initial temporary disruption followed by habituation. None have demonstrated lasting efficacy in peer-reviewed research.
The fundamental reason DIY rodent control in NYC typically fails is not the products — it is the inability to identify and seal every entry point in a complex building. Trapping and baiting reduce the current population, but new rodents enter through the same access points within days to weeks. Without sealing every entry point, you are running on a treadmill.
Call a professional immediately if: you see a live rat (not just mouse) in your unit; you find droppings in multiple rooms suggesting a distributed infestation; you have found droppings in food preparation areas; you can hear rats in walls; two weeks of DIY trapping has not produced any catch; or you are a tenant with a landlord who is not responding.
For restaurants, commercial spaces, and multi-unit buildings, DIY is not a practical option. The liability exposure and regulatory requirements demand licensed professional service.
